With well over 80 species, 100's of color pattern and/or morphological distinctions, the gekkonid genus Cyrtodactylus is a hefty project to take study. From Southeast Asia to western Melanesia and northern Australia, Bowfinger geckos are widespread with only a fraction available to the hobby. Due to their extreme adaptability, comes a gaudy group of geckos having almost jewel like colorations in a virtually limitless pallet. Even individuals of the same species can inherit such a different color pattern, it sparks more debate than any other gecko species as to its status. Due to this, there are numerous new species described every few years with extensive studies going on right now.
Care of Bowfinger geckos can range from very difficult to beginner depending on the species, origin and what you consider difficult. The most basic understanding is these are typically not tolerant of dry cages or high heat. Other than that, most species have various requirements and if met will not only thrive in your care, but share some of the most outstanding colors available by mother-nature.
